UAN tank

UAN tanks are often needed in agriculture. They store liquid fertiliser which often consists of a urea-ammonium nitrate solution (UAN). As this is a substance that is classified as hazardous to water, UAN tanks must fulfil certain criteria. This liquid fertiliser must not enter sewage works, bodies of water or even groundwater. As such, farmers must familiarise themselves with the exact criteria prior to purchasing a UAN tank so that the chosen tank can be used without issue.

The liquid fertiliser is spread onto fields but must be diluted and sprayed with nozzles to prevent the fertiliser from accumulating at any particular spot. If the fertiliser is too potent and not diluted properly, it may chemically burn the plants.

Laws and regulations

Which regulations must be met by UAN tanks is determined by the German Federal Water Act (WHG). The condition of the tank as well as its place of use must be taken into account. For example, a retention basin is required when filling and emptying the tank so that the liquid can be caught in case it is lost. Section 3 of the Federal Water Act outlines which points must be observed. Before a UAN tank is set up and put into operation, its suitability must be determined by a relevant authority. Checking for suitability may not be necessary if there is licence for the usage of the tank and said approval „implies adherence to water quality requirements“ (§63 par. 3).

Cleaning UAN tanks/strong>

Specific provisions must be observed for the maintenance and cleaning of UAN tanks. It is important that no liquids from these tanks are able to enter the groundwater during cleaning. For agricultural operations, this means that special attention must be paid to the tank’s place of use. This is because, in order to carry out the cleaning process in a simple and safe manner, the tank containing liquid fertiliser or other liquids that are hazardous to water must be securely supported and must not impact the environment if liquid is lost.

UAN tanks are specially designed for storing liquid fertiliser. They are therefore also storage tanks. They have to store the liquid safely and for long periods of time. The same applies to transport tanks, which can also be UAN tanks as the liquid can also be transported in some cases. When transporting such a substance, it is important that the tank is secure and watertight so that its contents do not enter or cause unnecessary impact to its environment. Care must also be taken when emptying and filling the tank.
